HOW IT WORKS
Working with various orphanages has brought to my attention some of the basic needs many people may take for granted; for example, having the proper undergarment during menstruation. Clermont Care Center has developed a program that is called Loving Me Period. The program includes sex education and focuses on young women issues before, during, and after their menstruation. We are determined to remove the stigma and other barriers facing young women during this crucial stage of their life by providing them the tools to live with dignity, good health, and self-confidence. We have learned that many girls are using newspaper, tree leaves, mattress stuffing, different clothes during menstruation and many young women miss several days of school during their monthly cycle. We have embarked on a journey to provide girls with a reusable feminine hygiene package that can be used during this precious time in the hope that these girls will not view menstruation as a burden or traumatic event. We also have a gynecologist that comes twice a year to perform annual exams. Through this program, we can help girls regain their self-esteem by giving them a “period in a bag”.
